These are the remnants of St.-Loup medieval castle, the Niepces administered the estate until the Revolution. It was the property of Louvois’widow, then it went to the Uzes family and at last to the Duke of Rohan-Chabot.The owners never lived in it, the Niepces were de-facto its masters.

Niepce’s grave in St.-Loup-de-Varennes cemetery. One can read : “Here rests Mr.Joseph-Nicephore Niepce,a model of all virtues, a father to the poors, the man whose profound genius gave to sciences some beautiful and important discoveries. Far too modest,his life went quietly in the bosom of his family from which he was removed july 5th 1833 aged 68 years .“.
